Joe Cribari

Founder & Chief Career Strategist

Joe entered consulting in Los Angeles upon earning his business degree. After a few years, he left consulting and trekked to Chicago to pursue his passion and graduate studies in Literature at Northwestern University. A bit disillusioned by the long and arduous journey to become a tenured professor, he again shifted gears, and he (along with his new bride) headed to sunny San Diego and UC San Diego (UCSD). During his 11 years at UCSD, he discovered a vast unmet need for professional and career development for PhDs. Joe focused his time fully understanding and uniquely meeting this large and talented community’s professional development needs to pursue careers across industries and professions.
As the first full-time career advisor dedicated to graduate students, Joe advised, taught classes, and presented workshops and seminars to hundreds of PhDs concerning their career development. As a Director of Alumni & Employer Relations, he got the unique opportunity to travel the nation, engaging with Ph.D. alumni and their employers about what it takes to stand out from the competition and secure your dream job.

“To land your dream career, your first job is to make the
unknown-known about yourself and every step of the process.

Joe is now the founder and chief career strategist at The Known Experience, which advises and supports PhDs (and masters) with broad career aspirations.  Joe’s rare combination of experience and firsthand knowledge was the perfect combination to successfully launch his company to help align graduate student talents and desires with employers’ needs.
He also founded the popular San Diego Ph.D. Career Conference (2008-2012) and was the faculty advisor and co-founder of the Advanced Professional Degree Consulting Club (APDCC) at UC San Diego, which earned Student Organization of the Year in 2014.  Both setting a Ph.D. talent-development standard emulated by research universities across the U.S. and abroad.
